Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposal is to set up a UK-based thematic network on 'Real time cure monitoring' in the area of polymer matrix composite parts manufacture. The scope extends into associated technology and science areas, such as sensor design, computer modelling, adhesives, process control, expert systems, relative benefits and validation of alternative cure monitoring methods. The network brings together the majority of UK academic and government funded groups active in this area, and has a strong representation and support from the aerospace, automotive and naval composite manufacturing companies. The network will create a UK focus and voice for this rapidly emerging field. This idea has been endorsed strongly by the Polymer Engineering Group (see letter of Support). The network will operate via a dedicated, secure, WWW-site on a daily basis, with 4-monthly technical/organizational meetings. Additional technical meeting and short-term secondments will be organised by specialist sub-groups of the network, as required. The main aims of such interactions will be to work up collaborative proposals, exchange well characterised samples for validation of techniques and formulate input into, for example, new standards. The network output will be disseminated in the open literature and by an industrial seminar.
