Summary on Grant Application Form |
Blockwork structures are among the most common in coastal defenses (seawall, harbor walls, breakwaters). There exists a large historical record of failures of these structures. This Network aims to pool records of such failures from UK and European experience and seeks to direct research towards a better understanding of the mechanism or mechanisms that cause the failure. An understanding of the failures can be gained only from a physical and numerical modelling of the detail of failure records, field data, hydraulic models tests, and physical and numerical modelling of the detail of failure initiation mechanisms such as pressure propagation in cracks. The proposed team comprises members with expertise and ongoing research in all these areas. The Network aims to coordinate and focus research towards the team's longer-term goal to turn new understanding into guidelines for the effective repair and maintenance of existing structures, and to disseminate this knowledge to the owner of blockwork structures and consultants involved in the repair and maintenance.
