Summary on Grant Application Form |
Sufficient quantities of a wide range of narrow fractions of linear and cyclic, hydrogenated and deuterated poly (dimethysiloxanes) will be prepared throughout the three year period and fully characterised by GPC, light scattering and mass spectroscopy. These materials along with those already prepared will allow all the fundamental neutron scattering studies described here to be carried out on these systems. SANS techniques will be used to study the conformations of isotopic blends (e.g. linear in linear). Radii of gyration and the scattering behaviour of cyclic and linear polymers will be compared to conflicting theoretical predictions and computer simulations. The isotopic effect will be investigated in these binary blends.SANS will be used to study the thermodynamics of topological blends (i.e. linears in cyclics). It is expected that novel effects will be observed. QENS techniques will be used to study the internal relaxation processes of cyclic and linear polymers. QENS studies of the topological blends (i.e. linears in cyclics) will provide information on the effect of topology on polymer dynamics. Finally, theories of polymer motion, such as reputation, will be explored using neutron spin-echo (NSE) techniques.
