The research described in this proposal is aimed at improving the understanding of High Modulus Roadbase materials. A large proportion of the research will be based around a laboratory study of crack propagation in these high stiffness materials. The mechanical properties of three grades of HMB materials will be charaterised using standard laboratory tests. Fundamental crack propagation studies will be carried out using both the four point bending test and a shear crack propagation test. The effects of temperature, stress, rate of loading and bitumen properties (including bitumen modifiers such as elastomers and plastomers) on crack propatation rate will be investiated.In addition to laboratory studies, testing will be carried out to determine in-situ material stiffness and monitor the condition of specimens cored from sites.A realistic, temperature, stress and loading rate senstive to fatigue law for HMBs will be developed for use in pavement design procedures. Improved pavement behavioural models will be developed for both flexible and composite pavements under both traffic and thermal loading.The final stage of the project is to investigate the properties of recycled material incorporating various percentages of HMB.
