Summary on Grant Application Form
A micro-respirometry system proposed for the raid assay of potential toxic effluent. The 'Baroxymeter' will employ pressure/volume transduction and is initially targeted for use in motoring of effluent which may be toxic for waste treatment plant, thus causing failure of the treatment process and downstream pollution. This is an innovative approach to a biosensor which may have wider application in diagnostics where that assay can be linked to an 02-consumption or other partial pressure change. The target is to achieve a portable assay of toxicity to 'activated sludge' from waste treatment plants and to standard cultures of E. coli and Nitrobacter sp. And to collaborate with the LINK Partners to produce a portable assay prototype device ( the Baroxymeter) for testing by the water companies in effluent monitoring.
