The aim of the research is to develop generic methods and computer-based prototypes for the rapid, product centred aggregate planning of manufacturing operations in the extended enterprise, at early stages of product design. New aggregate planning methods will be developed for multi-site modelling, product decomposition and the allocation of parts to facilities. Intranet tools will be developed to link remote facilities and allow the simultaneous application of aggregate planning methods, resulting in the selection of processes and machines and the creation of production routings using quality, cost and delivery criteria. For make-or-buy decisions it is important to include product and process knowledge in the routing evaluation process. This will be achieved by representing knowledge as a capability factor within the capability management methodology, thus creating knowledge-enriched aggregate plans.The proposal is timely since it addresses the need for planning support early in design, in-cycle with the lifecycle needs of a product. Its novelty lies in the distributed aggregate planning methods for the extended enterprise and the fusion of product and process knowledge with aggregate plans.The methods and computer prototype systems will be tested using industrial data to validate the perceived industrial benefits and promote the commercial exploitation of the research.
