Summary on Grant Application Form
Following an extensive literature review, a panel of 24 normally sighted and 24 visually impaired people will be tested under different Emergency and Escape Route lighting systes in smoke. These systems provide either localised tracks of light, more general illuminance along an escape route, or combinations of both. The tests will be recorded on video and the subjective comments of the volunteers will be obtained. This is the first time that a study of this depth has been undertaken. The results of the tests will be statistically analysed to identify differences between volunteers and systems and the results will be compared with existing research fidings. This work will identify the most successful emergency lighting system in smoke, and allow advice to be formulated for designers, engineers and those involved in low vision care. The findings will be compared with previous research of the systems under non-smoke conditions and disseminated by producing a final detailed report, a design guide and a www page.
