The use of organic coated galvanised steel for roof and wall cladding on industrial, commercial and domestic biuldings has grown dramatically in recent years. However, the mounting challenge of recycling these materials in ways that are both cost effective and environmentally acceptable has not yet been addressed. Steel is already one of the world's most recycled materials but, in order to prevent potential toxic emissions and minimise the loss of valuable resources, it is desirable to remove the galvanisation and organic coatings from used strip steels prior to scrap melting. The volatility of zinc in galvanised scrap means that zinc is vapourised and lost at steelmaking temperatures. Similarly, the combustion of chlorinated organic polymers, such as PVC, risks contaminating the steelmaking environment, and the environment at large, with chlorinated degradation products such as dioxons. The present proposal is aimed at examining the effectiveness of a range of novel techniques for stripping organic coatings and evaluating the products of stripping. Furthermore, rigorous kinetic and mechanistic studies will be performed on the combined electrolytic/ultrasonic stripping and recovery of metallic zinc. Novel multilayer organic coatings will be developed which will render the next generation of coating systems more readily recyclable without restricting lifetime.
