Research on high value, complex product and systems show that it is extremely difficult for firms to learn systematically from project-to-project. Few, if any, explicit mechanisms exist to enable knowledge capture and there is little awareness as to what constitutes best practice in the field. The proposed research, to be conducted jointly by the Centre for Research in Innovation Management at Brighton University and the Science Policy Research Unit st Sussex University, aims to gather data on best practice in inter-project learning, and to assist firms improve their performance in major projects. The research will be conducted with the guidance of a small number of partner firms. The research approach will involve desk-based research, an interview-based survey of international best practice, identification of existing tools and the development and testing of new methods for IPKCT within participating firms. Outputs will include a self-assessment audit tool, a report on best practices, a taxonomy of existing tools, and the development of new tools. The project aims to build a systematic generic model for capturing knowledge which takes into consideration different types of projects, different phases of projects and different types of companies.
