|
The integrity of sealed joints in curtain-walled structures is vital in providing a weather tight structure. Sealant systems comprise the sealant itself, a primer, and the backer rod; the latter item the depth of seal, provides support for tooling the sealant and should serve as a bond breaker to prevent three-sided adhesion. This proposal concerns a systematic investigation of sealed joint performance in order to provide guidance on the use of appropriate backer rod materials. Experimental investigations of sealants and backer rods seperately will be followed by the testing of joint systems. The performance of these materials acting in combination will be assessed using novel cyclic movement rigs, developed previously, which simulate the pattern of movements in real joints. The results will be used by the collaborators in specifications, sealed joint design guidance and in predicting performance. The adoption of new test methodologies will be actively encouraged by the research partners.
