Summary on Grant Application Form |
The project deals with the problem of obtaining a better understanding and quantification of sediment entrainment processes in the coastal zone with the object of producing improved macro-computer models to assist with the design of coastal works and the management of coastal resources. The work involves a multi-institute (Liverpool, Cambridge, Plymouth, POL, Kookmin (Korea) and Halcrows) study of sediment entrainment from coastal bedforms using laboratory experiments, computer modelling, both existing and new field measurements from EU-sponsored large-scale field experiments (INDIA, OAST 3D). The Cambridge work has three parts. Firstly, it is proposed to carry out new laboratory measurements of fluid velocities and sediment concentrations very close to ripple crests in order to investigate the way in which sediment is entrained from the bed. Secondly, a micro-scale model of the entrainment process will be developed. Thirdly, existing and new data will be analyzed and a database of near-bed concentrations established. These data will be used as an input to the Liverpool macro-model and also to calibrate the Cambridge and Liverpool micro-models.
