Summary on Grant Application Form |
The project deals with the problem of obtaining a better understanding and quantification of sediment entrainment processes in the coastal zone with the object of producing improved macro-computer models to assist with the design of coastal works and the management of coastal resources. The work involves a multi-institute (Liverpool, Cambridge, Plymouth, POL, Kookmin (Korea) and Halcrows) study of sediment entrainment from coastal bedforms using laboratory experiments, computer modelling, both existing and new field measurements from EU-sponsored large-scale field experiments (INDIA, OAST 3D). The Liverpool work involves three stages. Firstly, the construction of 3D micro-scale computer models of hydrodynamics and sediment movement over bed forms based on the FLUENT hydrodynamic package and sediment models from Kookmin and their testing using existing and new laboratory and field data provided by POL, Plymouth, Cambridge. Secondly, the improvement of existing 3D box-type macro-scle models using diffusion theory and improved entrainment boundary conditions based on Liverpool, Cambridge and Kookmin work with micro-models and lab. and field data (Cambridge, POL, Plymouth). Thirdly, the verification of the macro-model using UKCRF data anaylsed at Liverpool and field data supplied by Kookmin and Halcrows.
