Summary on Grant Application Form |
Forging toolset for 3 gear types will be designed and manufactured for use on the 1000 tonne press. Preforms will be machined from different specifications of steel to suit the interests of the collaborating partners. The preforms will represent shapes suitable for satisfactory die filling which it is known could be forged in two or three preforming stages when the processing route is taken up by industry. The forging trials will comprise an investigation of the various parameters: forging load, preform shape, preform temperature, die temperature and lubrication, on forged geometries and the mechanical/metallurgical properties of the parts. The involute teeth will be brought to finished form using a cold ironing operation. The parameters on the ironing experiments will be forged gear size to ironing die size, ironing die geometry, metallurgical condition of the workpiec particularly hardness, and speed of operation (mechanical or hydraulic press). An attempt will be made to fine-iron fully hardened gears to eliminate heat treatment distortion for producing very high accuracy. Gears of 4 different steel specifications will be treated in 4 different ways so that the associated shape changes and means or correction may be determined.
