Main objective: To investigate the phenomena of turbulent micromixing and particle formation in multi-component supercritical flows and, using this knowledge, to develop new applications of supercritical fluid technology in the area of pharmaceutical formulation and chemical production.Secondary Objective: To develop optical and x-ray analytical techniques to study supercritical fluids in situ.Background: Current crystallisation methods are non-ideal; control over the physical form and crystallinity of the drugs remain poor, process conditions and formulations are often empirically derived and lack efficiency.Supercritical fluids open up a novel way of crystallising materials, such that the desired particle characteristics are conferred during crystallisation.Programme: Crystallisation and mass-transfer phenomena in carbon dioxide/organic solvent/drug systems will be investigated using in situ optical and X-ray techniques in order to analyse and optimise the particle formation process. Theoretical modelling will enable the kinetics of particle formation and particle size distribution to be calculated, and the process to be scaled-up to pilot production level.
