This project is concerned with the development and calibration of a new approach for predicting the large displacement elasto-plastic response of composite and reinforced concrete floor slabs. The new approach will build on recent advances in modelling the 'geometric orthotropy' of composite floor slabs, and willl be considered in the context of nonlinear adaptive analysis, which is expected to lead to considerable computational savings. Although there are several areas of application for this work, the most immediate is concerned with the fire resistance of steel framed buildings. Recent experimental evidence from the Large Builgin Testing Facility at Cardington on an eight storey steel building has shown that the composite flooor slab can sustain considerable loads - after the loss of strength in the steel beams at elevated temperatures - well beyond the predictions of conventional analysis methods. This project will be undertaken in collaboration with the Building Research Establishment and British Steel, both of which will provide experimental results for the calibration of the proposed guidance for steel buildings subject to fire, and would consequently lead to a more competitive construction industry.
