Summary on Grant Application Form |
For the next generation of global distributed systems to be realised, significant system engineering problems must be resolved. The Open Distributed Processing (ODP) architecture is a vehicle for solving these system engineering problems. However, ODP is only an architectural model. In order to enable practical system development the architecture must be instantiated. The process of instantiation has three main elements: instantiating particular viewpoint languages, supporting cross viewpoint relationships and realising a suitable tool chain. Work to date has provided advanced support in a number of these areas. However, key issues remain relating to the Enterprise and Computational languages and the relationships between the viewpoints. The proposed work responds to these deficiencies by firstly completing an instantiation of the Viewpoint languages. In addition, we will define mechanisms to support the development of multiple viewpoints and the description of how they relate in such a way that the ultimate system is consistent. Support tools will be developed and a demanding case study will be performed.
