Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal is an experimental investigation, augmented by theoretical studies, into the use of optical fibre for the generation of OPC of CW laser radiation via SBS. This approach offers a practical and timely solution to obtaining high beam quality in power scalable CW solid state laser systems by using rugged and inexpensive state of the art fibre technology. Non-linear dynamical and stochastic behaviour has recently been shown to underlie SBS and indeed other non-linear processes, such as FWM, used for OPC. The bearing of this behaviour on the property and quality of OPC will be systematically addressed towards further understanding of this process, as well as for determining conditions for a stable POC device. From this, we will apply this device to a prototype all-diode MOPA system to increase the practicability of the broad area amplifier approach for the generation of high power diffraction limited emission. The programme benefits from the long standing expertise of the investigators in SBS in optical fibres and builds on our recent experimental observations in support of CW OPC via SBS, which are, to our knowledge, the first in the world.
