Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal, which aims to develop suitable non-structural and structural measures to maximise sustainable biodiversity on lowland gravel-bed rivers without compromising other river functions, represents a major collaboration programme between engineers, ecologists and environmental scientists. No rigorous scientific research has yet been carried out to assess the conservation and fisheries benefits of the various river restoration procedures and their range of application. By concentrating on lowland rivers and habitat improvement works which potentially will not adversely affect the flood capacity of the river, namely riffles, low bank deflectors and submerged vanes, it will be possible to carry out the necessary replicate studies for statistically valid conclusions to be drawn. At each site detailed hydraulic assessments will be carried out to establish velocity distributions, dead zones, water surface profiles, bed substrate and morphology which will enable their engineering performance to be assessed. This information, together with the proposed experiments on leaf litter retention and invertebrate drift and information on fish biomass will enable the observed ecological colonisation to be explained.
