Summary on Grant Application Form |
Digital imagery is becoming increasingly widespread, covering diverse areas such as remote sensing, medical imaging, and electronic publishing. Large databases of images exist and means are required for searching these databases without requiring manually generated textual descriptors. This leads to the requirement that images are retrieved from the databases using only their pictorial content. Given the state-of-the-art in computer vision systems the automatic matching of image content is difficult. Most current image database query systems either use sophisticated techniques which tend to be unreliable, or simplistic techniques which can not cope with many situations. The project will analyse images using histograms which are simple and reliable. Rather than just analyse first order colour statistics histograms as is commonly done, we will also incorporate second order statistics, from which image signatures will be generated. This will enable us to incorporate intensity, colour, texture, and shape in the image descriptions, making them a more powerful method. In addition, local histograms will be used so that the system can cope with occlusion.
