Many of the major linear algebra problems in scientific computing involve, or can be reduced to, the computation of a function of a dense matrix. The traditional view, coloured by experience in serial computing and predominantly based on flop (floating point operation) counts, is that the computation of the required matrix function, for example, the sign, exponential or logarithm of the matrix, is too expensive and alternative methods of solution have been developed. However this traditional view is no longer valid for parallel computations, where the flop count alone can be a poor measure of performance. Our aim is to develop parallel algorithms, together with supporting theory and analysis, for the computation of the more important matrix functions.
