Summary on Grant Application Form
Industrial uses of TE/TEA CO2 (and other gas) laser require systems with reliable and efficient long lifetime operation with controllable laser luse length and pulse shape to suit. Conventional self-sustained technology, coomonly used for driving these systems, while attractively simple, does not provide this capability. This proposal, in collaboration with BAe, is for research and development of TE.TEA SO2 laser based on innovative MSS discharge and switching technology, researched by the group at Heriot-Watt over the last five years, for providing efficient long pulse emission with tialored pulse shape and scaling in repetative operation. The laser systems is to be used to investigate surface preparation of A1 alloys for improving corrosion protection; an area of concern to the aerospce industry as at the use of current techniquem chormic acid anodising, amy be restricted in the future due to environmental considerations.
