Summary on Grant Application Form
This is an experimental study of the interactions of highly resolved electrons with molecules both in their ground states and when prepared in excited states. The programme has three aspects;1) Investigation of the resonance formation and symmetry implications in low energy (3 to 5eV) scattering of highly resolved electrons (DE = 30-40 meV) which produce excitation of vibrational levels in CO2 and N2O via the intermediate formation of Feshbach and/or Shape resonances. This will entail the measurement of large angle DCSs.2) Measurement of cross sections for electron scattering from excited vibrational modes of CO2 and N2O. These will be superelastic downward transitions to the ground state and other excited states as well as transitions from an excited mode to a higher state. In addition our analysis will yield the cross sections for elastic scattering from excited vibrational states.Absolute cross section measurements will also be determined for electron scattering from CO2, N2O and H2O in the electron energy region 1 to 1.5 eV. Here bench mark measurements are necessary to normalise the inelastic and superelastic cross sections.
