The aim of this project is to help to underpin the development of new ceramic and intermetallic composites by providing a computational modelling tool for the testing out of different fibres, matrices and interfaces prior to expensive fabrication and testing stages. Our modelling work will link up with experiments being undertaken by Professor R O Ritchie's research group at the Lawrence Berekeley laboratories, University of California, where fatigue and fracture experiments are being carried out at temperatures from ambient up to 1200*C. Systems being tested include partially-stabilised Zirconia, Alumina and Silicon Nitride reinforced with SiC whiskers, Titanium Aluminide reinforced with ductile TiNb particles, Niobium Aluminide and Molybdenum Disilicide (the melting point of MoSi2 is 2050*C) reinforced with Niobium particles. Recently, TiAl composites containing 10% TiNb particles gave KIC = 25Mpa/m (c.f. KIC =8Mpa/m for TiAl). However, while excellent toughness can be achieved, fatigue properties remain poor. This project will enable a methodical evaluation of interface/matrix and fibre properties with the aiming of improving the fatigue response.
