Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposed research seeks to develop a novel method for the compression of video sequences, and hence reduce the amount of data required for their storage or transmission. The proposed system is asymmetric, i.e. the bulk of the processing requirement is focussed on the compression sequence, while the decompression algorithm is very simple and may be implemented using relatively cheap hardware and software. The basis of the method is to consider an image sequence as an array of 1-dimensional pixel sequences, each sequence representing the brightness of a pixel of over a number of frames. The similarity of these sequences between parts of the same sequences between the same sequence, and between different sequences, is then exploited to achieve compression using vector quantisation techniques. An initial feasibility study has demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed method in both reducing the data required to represent a sequence, and in improving the quality of the decompression sequence, when compared to a number of more conventional techniques.
