Summary on Grant Application Form |
We plan to design and build a mobile and compact scanning tunnelling optical microscope for the characterisation of photonic crystal waveguides. The general aim is to characterise the optical properties of photonic crystals more directly and more completely than can be done using conventional far-field analysis. This will be done by simultaneous morphological and optical near-field mapping of the sample surface, while coupling light into a single waveguide device from the outside. We will perform the first measurements of the phase of guided modes in such structures as a function of position, and we hope ultimately to use the instrument to perform highly localised photopumping inactive devices. The first stage of the programme will be taken up with the design and construction of the instrument, which will involve the implementation of known principles in a specialised configuration. Thereafter we will study a range of photonic crystal samples using different excitation configurations
