Summary on Grant Application Form |
The 2DH shallow water and mild-slope wave climate equations will be solved using the finite volume technique implemented on adaptive unstructured or hierarchical meshes. The meshes will consist of triangular elements generated by the advancing front method, or of hierarchically arranged rectangular elements generated by the quadtree method. Adaptively will be incorporated through local vorticity, bathmetric, wave height, computational cell area, and local stability criteria, as appropriate. The use of adaptive meshes will permit the extra resolution of a locally finer mesh to follow in time the strong flow gradients present in recirculating flows. In addition the adaptive meshes will enable regions of interest characterised by significant variations in bathymertic features and land/water interfaces to be describes in fine detail. Particular attention will be paid to incorporating into the numerical models accurate Riemann-type boundary conditions. Computational results will be validated with existing data from the UKCRF, and compared with full-scale data provided by Mott Macdonald Ltd.
