Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposed research seeks to address the industrial need to improve the corrosion-wear performance of austenitic stainless steels. Hard coating materials used for this purpose are inadequate; this is attributed to a poor fracture toughness that contributes to both corrosion pitting and microfracture driven wear processes. It is planned to research the feasibility of producing toughened composite coatings based on several alumina-silicon carbide and chromium boride-metal combinations using unbalanced magnetron sputter deposition. These will be applied to polished austenitic 316L surfaces and subject to a variety of characterisation procedures including corrosive-wear tests in saline abrasive media.
