Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed project addresses the problem of phase change and mass transfer effects in transients; most current methodologies ignore these effects and assume phase equilibrium throughout. The proposed project is the second stage of a two-stage project: In Stage 1 we established the viability of methods of continuous sampling and analysis of the (multicomponent) gas and liquid phases using a small-scale rig in which a hydrocarbon gas is flowed over a static hydrocarbon liquid of different composition. In Stage 2, our intention is to carry out a full set of experiments on transient 2-phase flows of hydrocarbons in tubes at pressures up to 100 bara. Our aim is to be able to specify under what conditions phase equilibrium may be assumed, and for those conditions when it may not, to be able to estimate rates of approach to equilibrium.
