Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal aims to upgrade and develop the SRS Far-IR 13.3 beamline at Daresbury Laboratory in order to directly monitor the vibrations of molecule-metal bonds which play a pivotal role in determining the performance of an interface. The project will concentrate on interfaces relevant to fuel cell eletrocatalysis and in heterogeneous enantioselective catalysis. In both cases the following research strategy will be employed: i) Investigation of model interfaces, constructed in ultra-high vacuum conditions, to closely mimic the real interface. The complexity of the model interface will be increased in a step-wise fashion in order to directly establish the nature of molecule-metal and molecule-molecule interactions, and their perturbation by coadsorbed modifiers such as ions and solvent molecules which are known to play an important part in interface performance, ii) Investigation of realistic interfaces created by transfer into an environmental chamber in which the surface is subject to liquid environment.
