My sabbatical visit to Canada is designed to give a great boost to my academic career by allowing mw to gain new expertise in the theoretical modelling of optoelectronic devices. I will be based at Nortel Technology in Ottowa, Canada for 12 months. This proposal is to support the building of collaborations with a number of North American research groups which all have a world class reputation for optoelectronic research. These collaborations will lead, for example, to new models for long wavelength Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers (VCSELs) and mid-infrared lasers. The visit will also allow refinement of existing models by working with theoreticians and experimentalists at Nortel and elsewhere. I would also like to present my work at a number of conferences while on sabbatical to further help build collaborations and to raise the profile of the University of Surrey's research into optoelectronics.
