Regardless of their simplicity, all structures have an infinite number of degrees of freedom (DOF) when subjected to dynamic loading. One of the main objectives in selecting a mathematical model is to reduce the infinite number of DOF to a model with a limited number of DOF which captures the significant dynamic behavior of the system. Dynamic reduction methods include Guyan reduction (Guyan 1965) retaining linear parts only, modal synthesis (Hurty 1965) making corrections by using modal co-ordinates, dynamic substructure (Leung 1979) using modal and nodal (physical) co-ordinates and dynamic stiffness. They are developed to permit analysis and design of different portions of large scale structure to proceed independently and to permit testing of various parts to be performed individually. The research extends the methods to random loads an non-linear structures. Industrial problems to be addressed include response of flexible structures to wind and earthquake and aircraft wings to jet pressures which is continuously correlated in space and time. The research concentrates on distributed stochastic excitation on structures consisting of continuos members.
