Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal addresses an area which is currently under-researched, namely grain boundary (GB) plane crystallography (as distinct from GB misorientation) and connectivity in three-dimensions. Such a study is important because it allows the macroscopic GB structure to be linked directly to properties, in particular with intergranular degradation, which is a major cause of failure in service. The workplan firstly involves implementing experimental techniques already pioneered by the applicant to measure macroscopic GB crystallography in metal polycrystals. The second part of the programme is to design processing schedules to optimise the crystallography of GB plane populations in terms of their resistance to intergranular degradation. A Further, and most innovative, part of the project will track the connectivity of the GB network in three dimensions. This part of the work will be carried out in conjunction with Oxford Instruments plc to develop extensions to their electron back-scatter diffraction Crystal Orientation Mapping software to accomplish serial reconstruction of the microstructure. This will reveal intergranular degradation pathways. The proposal is relevant to EPSRC's mission since it advances scientific knowledge which can be applied to enhance the durability of metallic components, which in turn is economically beneficial to the end user. Moreover, it contributes directly to the competitiveness of a UK company's product.
