Summary on Grant Application Form |
We request 32,000 in matching funds to purchase a state-of-the-art multi-angle laser light scattering DAWN instrument and an Optilab differential refractometer from Optokem for the Sussex Polymer Group. 32,000 has already been pledged from three of our current industrial sponsors (Glaxo-Wellcombe, Biocompatibles and ICI). In addition, Optokem is willing to provide a substantial discount of 7,000 (>10%). As an SME, Optokem has no standard educational discount (see appendix) thus the whole 7,000 is claimed as a financial contribution in this proposal. A zero VAT rating is anticipated for this purchase, since some of our research has medical applications. The DAWN instrument will be used as a 'stand-alone' static light scattering (SLS) instrument for determining the unimer and miceller molecular weights of a wide range of novel water-soluble block copolymers and also as an on-line absolute molecular weight detector for our two gel permeation chromatography instruments (THF and aqueous eluents). The Optilab refractometer will be used to assess refractive index instruments, which are a vital pre-requisite for these SLS studies. These two state-of-the-art instruments will significantly improve our molecular weight measurement capability and thus ensure that our research remains internationally competitive.
