In a pilot study perofrmed by the applicants it was shown that the reflection of ultrasound was dependent on the stiffness of solid-solid interfaces in the low frequence regime. This project seeks to investigate what other contact paramenters can be measured. Shear waves, high freq. waves, and interface waves will be used to gain extra information about the interface. Models of the interaction of each wavtype with the rough surface contact will be developed. These models will first, calculate the interfacial geometry when two surfaces are loaded together and second, predict the interaction of ultrasound with that interfacial geometry. These ultrasonic methids will be used to study a number of contact phenomena including elastic and plastic asperity contact, sliding, and rolling contact. The effect of the presence of a lubricant film and particulate contaminants at the interface will be studied. The techniques will be applied to the tribology of cv joints. The distribution and conformality within in a joint will be studies with the project partners, GKN Technology. The feasibility of developing industrially useful 'sensor' for the measurment of surface roughness, area of contact, and lubricant films will be investigated.
