Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposal is to develop and evaluate a system that allows a user to generate a face image, either by reference to memory, as in the eyewitness to a crime, or by personal preference, such as producing an attractive face. A set of randomly-generated faces is produced initially. These are rated by the user, whereupon the system uses an underlying genetic algorithm to produce a new set that should conform more closely to the user's preferences. The system will be evaluated by comparison with traditional eyewitness techniques such as E-fit, both in terms of ease of use for the user and subjective match of the produced image to the target. A major aim of the project will be to investigate the utility of different underlying representations for the faces. The initial approach will be Principal Component Analysis of face images, separating shape information from finer-scale image detail. Other methods, such as the representations produced by independent component analysis of faces will be tested as alternatives. This may give further insight into the nature of the representations used by humans, since a more 'natural' representation within the computer system ought to be easier to use.
