Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposed programme is a continuation of an existing Rolling Grant, supporting the Physics, Chemistry and Materials Processing and Science, and the science underpinning device and microwave applications. The programme is heavily dependent on a Pulsed Laser Ablation Facility that will provide thin films and multilayers, novel and improved performance HTS compounds, and bi-epitaxially textured substrates for thick film materials. This programme also provides the Physical, Microstructural and Microwave characterisation facilities and main characterisation facilities for the wider Birmingham superconductivity program, which involves other EPSRC and a substantial number of EC Networks and programmes. The overall aim of the programme is to understand the underlying science of HTS and the relationships between synthesis, processing and superconducting properties at a microstructural level involving strong interdisciplinary collaboration. Extensive use is made of national and international facilities for structural chemistry and the very rich magnetic phases of the HTS superconductors using Low Angle Nuclear Diffraction and Muon Spectroscopy.
