The quality of a wound roll in dependent on the stresses which exist in it. In-roll stresses determine the structural integrity of the wound roll and make it an effective package for the web. These same in-roll stresses can, under certain conditions, impart damage the web. The overall motivation is thence to construct an automated methodology which is capable of continuously controlling roll quality, and is also capable of predicting the state of stress, for instance, for specific speed condition of roll winding.The proposed model shall consist of a number of physical, neural networks and hybrid models that will ultimately enable the simulation of the winding process and generate reliable predictions on the distribution of stress inside wound rolls. In this regard, the project encompasses incorporating material behaviour as described by viscoelasticity, thermo-viscoelasticity, creep and shrinkage into a physical model, based on finite-element modelling and analyse, which enables the instantaneous prediction of the state of stress within a 3-D web. On the otherhand, (local) neural networks will be established via the use of available on-line and off-line measurements for the purpose of developing a controller to manipulate controllable parameters, such as, tension, winding speed, etc.
