Summary on Grant Application Form
The TCP protocol has become the most widely used transport protocol today, due largely to the explosive growth of the TCP/IP Internet in recent years. An important emerging underlying network technology for the support of current data traffic and future integrated multimedia services is ATM networks, Therefore, the success of TCP traffic being transported efficiently over ATM networks is crucial to the future of the internet. However, the combination of TCP and ATM protocols to deliver transport services has caused significant performance problems. These problems are mainly due to the conflicting interactions of TCP and ATM (ABR, UBR) congestion control algorithms. The aim of the proposed project is to study the extent of negative interactions between TCP and ATM control algorithms and derive new algorithms by applying a distributed AI approach. This approach reasons about collective processes through coherence and co-ordination The interaction between ATM and TCP congestion control will be modelled as a distributed problem solving system, and the individual algorithms as self-interested agents. The research methodology for this work is based on a framework integrating modelling, simulation and prototyping. It is explicitly defined in the proposal to ensure a high level of confidence in the results obtained.
