Porous gel-silica glass will be doped with transition metal ions (Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu) following stabilisation and then densified to produce thermally and chemically stable coloured gel-glasses. our studies of Co, Ni, Cu, Cr, within gel-silica glasses showed shifts of absorption spectra with thermal history. This study will control variables that influence the molecular environment and ligand fields of the colourants; time at temperature, concentration of water during densification; concentration of dopant; textural effects of the gel-silica matrices; surface area, size distribution and interconnectivity of porosity. The UV-Vis absorption spectra of the coloured gel-glasses will be interpreted using semi-empirical molecular orbital calculations (ZINDO) and the results used to select co-dopants of Al or P to modify molecular fields of the transition metal ions, as occurs in crystals. The dopant concentrations and processing schedules will be optimised to produce coloured gel glasses with unique colours that are inexpensive, nontoxic and thermally and chemically stable.
