Summary on Grant Application Form |
Micropollutants - low concentration of certain elements in water and wastewater treatment systems - have been well studied but the beneficial effects of micro-elements are less well known. The proposal is based upon the purchase on an inductively coupled plasma - atomic emission spectrophotometer with autosampler, capable of measuring elements in aqueous samples down to parts per billion (g/l). It will be used to enhance and expand the scope of a number of existing projects investigating the impact of micronutrients on industrial eeluent treatment, phosphate removal in biological processes, scale formation and amelioration, disinfection and flocculation. Future projects include prevention of nitrification inhibition, impact on disinfection systems and wastewater sludge handling. Experimental work will be started at bench-scale using model systems before being tested at pilot-scale. The School of Water Sciences within the School of Industrial and Manufacturing Science has extensive pilot-plan facilities at the University's own sewage treatment works. All existing projects attract industrial support and it is anticipated that future ones will also. Results will be disseminated through the refereed literature and by holding a symposium on the subject.
