Summary on Grant Application Form
The project aims to reinforce the position of the department as a centre of excellence in automotive brakes related research through the provision of a state-of-the-art brake dynamometer. The proposed research will exploit the increasingly rapid developments which are envisaged within the automotive industry for ultra-lightweight and hybrid vehicles, all of which will require brake friction pairs specially designed to meet the duty cycles of the vehicles in question. The principal areas of research activity align with strategic science and technology priority areas identified by Foresight Transport and Materials. The include: Friction material development, lightweight component application, friction pair optimisation, brake noise and vibration and foundation brake development. The equipment will ensure the group is able to rapidly progress the validation of complex mathematical models by removing the need for external dynamometer testing. To satify the requirements of the research group, a specialised test stand has been specified through collaboration with the sponsoring company. It is comprised of a number of distinct components which when customised and assembled form the working piece of research equipment that is both innovative and inherently flexible to meet the future demands of the group.
