Summary on Grant Application Form |
The aim of the propsal is to seek funds for a supply of dry, high pressure cooling air for principal use in three existing research rigs currently investigating both fundamental mechanisms and practical applications of flow and heat transfer in the internal air system of gas turbine engines. The air supply chosen by the applicants is an Atlas Copco ZT250 - 7.5 - 50, oil free, air cooled two stage, rotary air compressor with both hot and cold air offtakes and an air cooled fridgedrier. This configuration will provide 0.82 kg/s of flow at a gauge pressure of 5 bar and temperature of 15(degrees) C. It is not intended to be used as a prime mover for the research rigs, but to complement the hot (180 degrees C) air supply already in place at the University of Sussex, derived from a gas turbine driven compressor. The combination of these two air supplies will provide significant temperature differences and independant control of flow rates and hence enable high quality experimentation and competitive international research advantage. In addition to current and future research on internal air systems work, it is envisaged that this new air supply will also be used for research on fundamental studies on roughness, compressor testing and calibration work.
