Rheological analysis is widely used in the food, cosmetics and polymer-processing industries industries to provide quality control during the manufacturing process. A commercially-available rheometer system has been identified by the applicants for the purpose of characterising the rheological properties of biological tissues and their analogues under dynamic test conditions.The proposed research will examine the extent to which the anomalous viscous properties of whole blood and vitreous humour influence the nature of the flow within physical models of peripheral artery reconstructions and the human eye, respectively. The applicants aim to develop analogue fluids that model the viscous and viscoelastic properties of these biological tissues more faithfully than Newtonian analogues. Having developed analogues with appropriate physical properties, we will observe the flow patterns and quantify shear stresses that develop at the solid-liquid interfaces within each system.This approach is one which will provide important information on the fluid shear stresses to which the cells that line the retina and vessel wall are subjected in health and disease, and will complement ongoing research projects that concern the haemodynamics of arterial reconstructions and the development of intraoccular drug-delivery systems.
