This proposal seeks to carry out a pilot study which will investigate the potential of soft computing methods for three different building systems and associated plant. The three applications to be considered are:-(i) heating, ventilating and air conditioning (as those found in commercial office buildings),(ii) a low energy building providing the required occupant comfort conditions using natural ventilation,(iii) an endothermic system which absorbs ambient energy and upgrades it via heat hump techniques.The University of Portsmouth's building research group has access to these three systems which are prototype research facilities. All three systems are operational, and data is currently being monitored and gathered from the systems to develop model-based solutions to improve operational strategies.The pilot study is aimed at looking at all three systems and investigating the potential of soft computing methods, formulating a hybrid structure for the modelling and determining off-line models for the three applications. The intention of the research is to identify which applications are most appropriate for the soft computing methods so that future proposals can be identified for more detailed analysis.
