Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposed research programme aims to develop, enhance and expand the ring manufacturing process for conventional and advanced gas turbine materials. This will be achieved through the development, in-depth scientific understanding, and optimisation of (a) the hot rolling process, and (b) a unique low pressure centrifugal spray forming process (LPCSD) which will be used to produce low cost, microstructurally enhanced net-shaped preforms. Finite element (FE) based models will be developed in order to elucidate the mechanisms of metal flow, recrystallisation and microstructural development during the ring rolling process, and these models will be experimentally validated through the hot ring rolling and evaluation of production-scale components. Preforms for ring rolling will be produced using a purpose-built clean-melt low pressure centrifugal spray deposition (LPCSD) facility, developed in part as a result of the IRC foundation programme on spray forming and atomization, and which will be financed via a European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) grant. Since this facility will be capable of operating under near-vacuum conditions, the full cost and metallurgical benefits of the spray forming process will be achieved, without the product suffering the debilitating effects associated with gas entrapment.
