Summary on Grant Application Form |
Our objective is to facilitate a number of prime research projects through the acquisition of a new X-ray Microanalysis System for the SEM in the University Electron Microscopy Centre. The scientific case is based on three key projects, however, the new accessory will benefit our whole Science and Engineering research community. This upgrade is an essential part of the longer term plan to maintain the EM Centre as an outstanding, shared strategic resource. The illustrative projects have their individual short-term goals which encompass certain of the Foresight materials priorities:* mapping of elemental composition across some durable bioceramics with the view to preparing improved high-volume ceramic composites.* characterisation of Si-Ge layers to progress the development of advanced electronic devices with novel process architecture.* mapping components and surface containments following erosion testing of prototype ultra-hard coatings. This vital upgrade will not only enable and stimulate such leading-edge research but also speed throughput, easing problems of high instrument demand. In addition, it will fulfil a crucial role in postgraduate education, permitting training of research students to the required professional competency. External support comes as an exceptional discount from the manufacturer and a commercial contribution from the EM Centre Consultancy Service.
