Summary on Grant Application Form |
Coastal Management strategies depend for their reliability on a full and balanced view of the nature of coastal sediment processes. This research takes its origin from the recently discovered deficiencies of certain sediment scaling systems and seeks to develop more soundly based scaling laws governing the modelling of mixed beach sediments. The research specifically seeks to develop a better understanding of mixed sediment beach processes. The complementary research skills of the three research groups will be utilised in a concurrent and linked programme of field, laboratory and theoretical studies. Use of the latest laboratory and field instrumentation will enable better measurements and comparisons than previously possible to be carried out. The field deployment, to measure conditions on a mixed beach at Elmer, will add to an already large database of information about this site. The research will seek by theoretical analysis and appropriate physical measurements, to evaluate the magnitude all the forces on the sediment in the field and in a 1:17 and 1:50 scale mode. By this means a more soundly based formulation of the appropriate scaling laws will be developed.
