Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed research will develop techniques for the automated production of semantic annotation of motion video from MPEG encodings of that video. The work overcomes problems of traditional image processing by adopting a bi-directional approach, in that image processing algorithms will be guided by knowledge-based structures specific to moving film. These structures were developed for manual annotation by previous EPSRC-funded research at Lancaster, notably the CLORIS and MIM projects. The programme will develop tools to support the automated derivation of descriptions of visual states in the moving film, in objective and cinematographic terms. The tools will enable end users to intervene to disambiguate the system's interpretation, when necessary. A later stage of the project will prototype similar techniques for the identification of event within encoded video. The annotations themselves will e attached to the MPEG stream, and can thus be transmitted across networks along with the encoded video. The research involves collaboration with the BBC, who will serve as content provider, will input technical expertise, and will provide end users for the testing of the prototype. The results will inform the MPEG-4 and MPEG-7 activities, other standards bodies, and industrial contact such as British Telecom and Hewlett-Packard.
