Summary on Grant Application Form
The main theme of this proposal is the synthesis and evaluation of a low cost, novel chromophoric building block in preparation of a range of new monomeric and polymeric materials for NLO application. The NLO chromophoric building block is based on an original idea by Pan et al which incorporates two heterocyclic compounds, one electron-rich (thiophene) and the other electron-deficient (pyrazines, pyrimidines etc). This unique combination allows the dipole moment and hyperpolarisability to be independently manipulated to achieve thermally stable, low cost, non-toxic NLO materials with wide optical transparencies and high .. values. By suitable modifying the structure of this NLO chromophore we will be able not only to evaluate a range of new NLO materials but also assess the usefulness of (a) poled cast polymer films and networks and (b) LB technology, in the fabrication of a variety of NLO structures. This is one of the very few research programmes which has been designed not only to investigate the properties of a low cost, novel NLO material but also to assess the merits of a number of techniques used to fabricate NLO structures. We will use this structure/property study to design new and useful NLO materials.
