Summary on Grant Application Form |
This project aims to study the effect of oxygen and other interstitial impurities on the plasticity of TiAl and Ti3Al by using very high purity, high quality single crystals. To understand the fundamental deformation behaviour of titanium aluminide-based alloys, it is essential to exclude any extrinsic effects, such as impurities. We will combine our unique materials preparation and crystal growth facility at Birmingham with our expertise on metal purification, to prepare high quality crystals with well controlled impurity levels. Detailed microstructural and compositional analysis will be carried out on samples deformed at various temperatures, while transmission electron microscopy will be used to analyse dislocations. Single crystals of TiAl and Ti3Al alloyed with Mn, Cr and Nb will also be prepared for mechanical tests, so as to explore comprehensively ways of improving the low temperature ductility of these materials.
